Transactional Video-on-Demand (TVOD): TVOD refers to revenue generated by content that is Sold and Rented. Content Owners earn revenue when consumers purchase content from Digital Platforms for permanent ownership (Electronic Sell-through, or EST) or for a limited time period (rental VOD). The Digital Platform collects the full retail price of the sale or rental, takes an agreed percent of revenue, and then passes the rest back to Content Owners.
Ad-Based Video-on-Demand (AVOD): Revenue is generated by advertisements placed in or around content. Advertisers pay Digital Platforms to place ads on the service, which is free to consumers. Digital Platforms then pay Content Owners a percent of revenue earned, which is based on the number and length of consumer views.
Subscription Video-on-Demand (SVOD): Content Owners are paid a flat licensee fee by Digital Platforms, either in a lump sum payment or over the course of the agreement. In exchange for the license fee, Digital Platforms can offer unlimited streams of content to their consumers, who pay a monthly subscription fee.
